Aida Fernández Ríos ( March 4, 1947 in Vigo - December 22, 2015 in Moaña ) was a Spanish oceanographer who made a name for herself in particular with contributions to climate research and ocean acidification .

Life

Ríos began early with her work at the Fisheries Research Institute , the later Marine Research Institute ( Instituto de Investigaciones Marinas ) of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Vigo . She started her career as a laboratory assistant at the CSIC in 1972 and combined her work with her studies, which was something extraordinary at the time. She made progress with great determination in various technical positions, studied biology, did her doctorate with Fernando Fraga and thus built a scientific career. She was a professor ( Profesora de Investigación ) and the first female director of the CSIC Marine Research Institute. Her longtime CSIC colleague Antonio Figueras once recalled her productive collaboration: “We both had to accept losses of loved ones when we were young and that is why we understood each other, although we sometimes had our differences because we both had our characters, but as soon as we said what had to be said, we enjoyed our friendship again. "

Ríos died in a traffic accident in late 2015. An obituary said about her: “Those who have worked with Aida always see in her a sharp, precise scientific spirit as well as an open and friendly character, a person who enjoyed it, her wisdom, her zest for life and her exuberant vitality to share with colleagues, an example of personal progress for the younger generations. "

Act

Ríos was a recognized scientist in the international oceanographic research community and made many contributions in her field, which she was able to publish in major journals. Her work on the acidification of the world's oceans due to global CO 2 emissions helps to understand the consequences for marine life with calcareous shells such as mussels , which are increasingly threatened by the falling pH value . With her contributions she was able to show that the acidification of the oceans can best be explained in terms of man-made CO 2 emissions. Ríos was considered one of the most important experts in this field in Europe.
