The Aimaken (also written Aimaq ; from Persian ایماق aymāq ) are a confederation of nomadic tribes of different origins, but today almost all of themspeak Persian as their mother tongue and live in the central region of Afghanistan . They make up about 2% of the total population. The word aymāq is a borrowing from the neighboring Turkic languages of Central Asia (oymāq) and means "clan" or "tribe" (compare Mongolian aimag ).

In Afghanistan they are mainly known as Tschahār-Aymāq ("Four Aimaken"). The four main tribes are:

  • Aimāq-Hazāra (Mongolian descent)
  • Jamjedī (Iranian descent)
  • Fīrūzkūhī (Iranian descent)
  • Taymanī (Iranian descent)

Other, smaller groups are occasionally added to the four great tribes, including the Ḡalmanī, Malekī, Mīschmast, Sīāmūsā, Ṭāherī, Tīmūrī, Zūrī and others.

The Aimāq-Hazāra are not the Hazāra people . In contrast to the Imamitic Hazāra, the Aimāq-Hazāra are Sunni Muslims and are often counted among the neighboring Tajiks .
