airmates is a software-based platform for onboard courier transports. With the help of onboard couriers, also known as OBCs (“On Board Couriers”) or “Airmates”, particularly urgent and sensitive shipments are transported around the world and personally accompanied during the entire delivery process. The complete digitization of quotation, booking and tracking processes on the platform eliminates the need for manual and time-consuming searches for suitable flight connections and couriers. In parallel to the automated flight determination, suitable and previously verified couriers are located and requested using a specially developed "airmates app". In addition to the courier selection, the app ensures permanent shipment tracking .
History and background
The logistics service provider time: matters GmbH was founded on January 1, 2002 and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lufthansa Cargo AG since August 2016 . The company offers onboard courier transport. The development of the software-based airmates platform began at the end of 2015, followed by the launch in 2017. Users can enter their shipment data on the platform and receive a complete and immediately bookable offer in less than a minute. Airmates currently has a global network of 10,000 couriers in more than 50 countries.
Onboard couriers (airmates)
Transports by onboard courier should enable permanent, personal monitoring of the express shipment as well as fast delivery. The courier usually picks up the goods directly from the client and accompanies them personally on board the next available aircraft to the destination. The advantages of this transport option are its maximum speed and reliability, which is why it is often used in emergency logistics. Especially in spare parts logistics , downtimes due to missing machine parts can quickly lead to high monetary losses, for example in the automotive industry , other manufacturing industries or in an aircraft that is unfit to fly ( aircraft on ground ). Medical samples, important documents and haute couture are also transported by airmates. The main task of an onboard courier is the personal collection, the accompanied transport, the customs clearance and the delivery of the shipment at the destination. Depending on the weight and size, the goods are transported on the plane by the courier as hand luggage or, in the case of larger shipments, as luggage with the highest priority. This avoids waiting times and ensures the fastest possible delivery.

Since December 2019, airmates has been neutralizing climate-damaging CO₂ emissions caused by air courier transport. The climate compensation also includes the collection, flight and delivery of the shipments.
