Aitolus (son of Oxylos)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aitolos ( Greek  Αἰτωλός ) is the son of Oxylos and Pieria in Greek mythology .

He died early, and because of an oracle saying that his body was not allowed to rest either inside or outside the city of Elis , the parents built the tomb under the gate that led to Olympia and the Temple of Zeus . It is said that at the time of Pausanias (2nd century AD) the custom still prevailed that the Gymnasiarch of Elis made sacrifices at the grave of Aitolus every year.
