Ajen Yohl Mat († August 8, 612 ) was a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Maya city of Palenque . He ruled from January 1, 605 until his death.

Origin and family

Both Ajen Yohl Mat's date of birth and family origins are unknown. It is generally believed that he was a son of his predecessor, Yohl Ik'nal . During his reign a Janaab Pakal also played an important role. Little is known about him. He could have been another son or husband of Yohl Ik'nal.

Reign

Ajen Yohl Mat ascended the throne on January 1, 605 ( long count 9.8.11.9.10, calendar round 8 Ok 18 Muwan), two months after the death of his predecessor Yohl Ik'nal. The exact position of Janaab Pakal is unclear, possibly he ruled together with Ajen Yohl Mat.

On an inscription from the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, celebrations for the end of a calendar period are handed down for June 13, 606 (9.8.13.0.0, 5 Ajaw 18 sec). Ajen Yohl Mat was able to gain extensive power over the neighboring city of Santa Elena during his reign and apparently installed a ruler there. On April 4, 611, however, Palenque suffered another heavy military defeat against Calakmul . As twelve years earlier, the enemy troops penetrated into the center of the city, this time under the direct leadership of the ruler of Calakmul " Loop Snake ".

This military defeat seemed to be followed by a dynastic crisis in Palenque. Janaab Pakal died on March 4th 612 (8/9/18/14/11, 3 Chuwen 4 Wayeb) and Ajen Yohl Mat on August 8, 612 (8/9/19/4/6, 2 Kimi 14 Mol). He probably left no offspring. A person named Muwaan Mat succeeded him to the throne, but whose identity has not yet been clearly established.
