Muwaan Mat was the code name of a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Maya city of Palenque , who ruled between 612 and 615.

Reign

Muwaan Maat ascended the throne on October 19, 612 ( long count 9.8.19.7.18, calendar round 9 Etz'nab 6 Keh). His reign was preceded by a heavy military defeat by Palenque against Calakmul . His predecessor Ajen Yohl Mat and probably several other members of the ruling dynasty died a little later. According to an inscription from the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, this also had an impact on the celebrations at the end of a calendar period that took place during Muwaan Mat's reign on May 7, 613 (9.9.0.0.0). The inscription laments the absence of the ruler and the ruler, which meant that important rituals could not take place.

Muwaan Mats reign ended in 615 when K'inich Janaab Pakal I ascended the throne. Under him, Palenque achieved a new political and architectural bloom.

identity

It is not yet clear who was hiding behind Muwaan Mat. The most widespread opinion is that it was a nickname or alias of Sak K'uk ' (* around 580; † 640), the mother of K'inich Janaab Pakal I, who acted as regent during his minority. It was also she who presented her son with the crown when he was inaugurated. The name Muwaan Mat, however, goes back to a (male) god who allegedly lived in 3121 BC. Was born seven years before the beginning of the current period of the Mayan calendar and later fathered the three patron deities Palenques. Other possibilities were therefore also considered, such as the fact that Palenque had no legitimate ruler at the time or was ruled by someone who was not allowed to be named in the texts, such as a governor appointed by Calakmul .
