Ildefonso Aroztegui (born July 19, 1916 in Melo , Uruguay ; † November 10, 1988 ) was a Uruguayan architect .

Aroztegui, a student of Julio Vilamajó , successfully completed his architecture studies in 1940. The following year he won the Grand Prize of the Faculty of Architecture. From 1942 to 1945 he went to the USA on a scholarship, where he earned a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois . He took on a teaching position in design, worked in an architecture office and won numerous prizes. He then went to Brazil where he taught in Porto Alegre . He also worked from 1947 to 1958 at the Facultad de Arquitectura of the Universidad de la República .

From 1961 to 1963 he was president of the Sociedad de Arquitectos del Uruguay , the Uruguayan architects' association, from 1967 to 1968 he headed the university association (Agrupación Universitaria del Uruguay) and from 1969 to 1972 he held the position of director of the Dirección Nacional de Viviendas .

The multiple award-winning Aroztegui was responsible for the construction of various buildings that shape the cityscape of Montevideo, such as the Agencia 19 de Junio and the Comercio Merlinsky y Syrowicz . The Casa Terra , which was planned in 1949 , the Vivienda Aroztegui , the Cine Melo and the headquarters of the Club Nacional de Football , one of the two clubs that shaped Uruguayan football, were also created under his aegis.
