Sak K'uk ' († September 12, 640 ) was an important noblewoman of the Maya city of Palenque and the mother of the ruler ( Ajaw ) K'inich Janaab Pakal I. Before his accession to the throne, she was possibly briefly ruler or regent between 612 and 615 from Palenque.

Origin and family

The exact family ancestry of Sak K'uk 'is not certain. After David Freidel and Linda Schele , she was a granddaughter of the ruler Yohl Ik'nal (583–604). Their successor in office Ajen Yohl Mat (605–612) was Sak K'uk's uncle and his brother Janaab Pakal was her father. She was married to K'an Mo 'Hix , who probably did not come from the ruling dynasty of Palenque. K'inich Janaab Pakal I, born in 603, is the only known child from this marriage.

Karen Bassie-Sweet , on the other hand, suggested a different genealogy: According to this, Sak K'uk 'was a daughter of Yohl Ik'nal and Janaab Pakal and both Ajen Yohl Mat and K'inich Janaab Pakal I were sons of Sak K'uk' and K'an Mo 'Hix.

Life

Few details have survived from the life of Sak K'uk '. Her exact date of birth is unknown. Based on a picture in the palace of Palenque showing how she presented her son with a crown when he was enthroned , it is concluded that she had great political power in the years around 615. Since K'inich Janaab Pakal I was only twelve years old at the time, she may have served him as an important advisor. It is unclear whether she acted as ruler or regent before his accession to the throne. After Ajen Yohl Mat's death, Palenque was ruled between 612 and 615 by a mysterious ruler known as Muwaan Mat . This is an alias that is based on one of the protective deities Palenque. The once widespread assumption in research that Muwaan Mat was an epithet that Sak K'uk 'took on in her function as regent was challenged by David Stuart , who was able to show that it was the mythological Muwaan Mat a male deity acted.

Sak K'uk 'died on September 12, 640 (9.10.7.13.5). Her grave is unknown.
