reception

Critic Heather Phares of the music website Allmusic awarded the publication four and five possible stars and noted that the music by the duo Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard combines a certain new drama with traditional orchestration and revives old and forgotten instruments. Phares also praises Garrad's voice, which would go very well with ancient Rome. Victor Carr Jr. of Classics Today explains that the large amount of percussion in the soundtrack reflects the mood of the film well and referred to similarities to the soundtrack Batman by composer Danny Elfman . Although the Zimmer film music reflects the style and mood of ancient Rome well, the journalist criticizes that too many elements of pop music were incorporated by the composer. Carr Jr. criticizes the commercialization of music. Even so, Zimmer and Gerrard brought the ethnic component back to the music well. He awarded six out of ten points for the artistic performance of the musicians and rated the album with eight out of a possible ten points for the audio quality of the release. The website Film Recommendation wrote: “Hans Zimmer has probably succeeded in his masterpiece with Gladiator . Even in the chaos of The Battle , every note has found its intended place. Not only the monumental themes of The Battle or The Might of Rome , but also the mystical and optimistic sound sequences of The Wheat and Now We Are Free make Gladiator [...] an absolute classic. "
