Aké Arts and Book Festival

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Aké Arts and Book Festival, or Aké Festival for short, has been a cultural festival in Nigeria that has taken place every October or November since 2013 and is described as the largest annual event for African authors and everyone involved in the literary business. From 2013 to 2017 the festival took place in Abeokuta , since 2018 it has been held in Lagos . The founder of the festival is Lola Shoneyin .

History of the festival

The first Aké Festival in 2013, entitled "The Shadow of Memory", had a high-quality, multi-day program. Among other things, Nobel Prize winner Wole Soyinka gave young Nigerians the opportunity to ask questions about his life and work in a session. From the beginning, the festival has had next to literature and theater , music and film in the program. One of the criticisms of the first edition of the festival is the lack of visitors. The titles of the following festivals were 2014 "Bridges and Pathways", 2015 "Engaging the Fringe", 2016 "Beneath this Skin", 2017 "This F-Word" (F for Feminism), 2018 "Fantastical Futures" and 2019 "Black Bodies | Gray Matter ". The title of the festival for 2019 is also intended to shed light on the topic of mental health. In 2019, the festival added another highlight to the previously unexplored senses with Eat the Book , an event at which recipes from African novels are served, to the program that has been rich for years .

Aké Review has been a publication for the festival since 2014.

The Nommo Awards , the first prizes for science fiction and fantasy from Africa , have been presented at the festival since 2017 .
