Akafuku Mochi ( Japanese 赤 福 餅 ) is a Japanese sweet from the Kinki region . The dessert is produced by the confectionery manufacturer Akafuku, founded in 1707 (then as a tea house).

Akafuku Mochi is a rice cake that is surrounded by sweet bean paste . The pattern of the bean paste depicts the Isuzu River, and the packaging depicts the Grand Shrine of Ise .

Tsuitachimochi ( 朔日 餅 ) is sold on the first day of every month (except January) . Tsuitachimochi is a special type of Akafuku Mochi that changes every month.

Since the Mochi are made without additives is the use-by date in the summer and in the winter only two three days. On October 12, 2007, it was announced that Akafuku had changed the manufacture and expiration dates of unsold Akafuku mochi. This was followed by a sales ban that was lifted on January 30, 2008.
