Akazome Emon ( Japanese 赤 染 衛 門 ; * around 956; † 1041 ) was a Japanese poet.

Life

Akazome was the daughter of Akazome no Tokimochi , from whose post as palace guard ( emon ) her emergency name is derived. She was the maid of honor of Rinshi , the wife of the ruler Fujiwara no Michinaga and of their daughter Shōshi . Her husband was the poet Ōe no Masahira .

Traditionally, the - at least partially - authorship of the first Japanese historical story Eiga Monogatari is ascribed to her. This "narrative of splendor and glory" spans a period of 200 years, beginning with the reign of Emperor Uda and ending with the imperial period of Horikawa , and focuses on the deeds of Fujiwara no Michinaga. Akazome also wrote a travel diary under the title Owari kikō .

600 of her Waka poems were published in the Akazome emon shū collection . Other poems were included in official collections such as Shūi wakashū . Akazome is one of the thirty-six immortals of poetry of the Middle Ages ( Chūko Sanjūrokkasen ) and one of the thirty-six female immortals of poetry ( Nyōbō Sanjūrokkasen ).
