Aketze is an island in the Bay of Biscay belonging to the Spanish Basque Country (province of Bizkaia ) . It is located near the rocky coast between Bakio and Bermeo , 700 meters northeast of the island of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe .
The heavily jagged island, which basically consists of a massive rock , is around 170 meters long and a maximum of 120 meters wide; the highest point of the uninhabited island is 80 meters above sea level .
Aketze is difficult for people to reach or to commit. The area therefore serves as a welcome breeding ground for numerous, sometimes rare, sea birds .
