The Akhadachandi Temple is a religious building from the 10th century in the city of Bhubaneswar in the Indian state Odisha . The temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Durga and was built during the reign of the Somavamsi dynasty.

location

The temple is located in the old town of Bhubaneswar, known as Badu Sahi, on the southwestern bank of the Bindu Sagar pond. It is located between the Markandesvara Temple in the east and the Mohini Temple in the northwest, in the south there is a residential area. The temple faces south, the statue of the goddess faces east.

architecture

The temple measures 1.28 meters by 1.83 meters and is 2.49 meters high and has a cylindrical roof. It is little ornamented both outside and inside. On the roof there is the so-called mastaka , consisting of a kalasa and two flanking gajakranta . The door frame is decorated with pilasters . In addition to the main entrance, there are two side entrances. Coarse sandstone was used as the building material, the architectural style of the temples is reminiscent of the Kalinga style.

The temple was restored by the state of Odisha, the state of preservation is considered good today.

Religious use

The temple is an active place of worship of the ten-armed Mahisasuramardini Durga. Religious festivals such as Durgastami or Balabhoga are celebrated there with rituals.
