Ogata Akira

Ogata Akira ( Japanese 緒 方 章 ; born October 26, 1887 in Osaka Prefecture , Japan ; † August 22, 1978 ) was a Japanese pharmacologist , doctor of pharmacy and professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo . He founded endocrinology in Japan and had a great influence on the development of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry.

In 1912 he graduated from the University of Tokyo Medical and Pharmaceutical Faculty, where he had studied under Nagai Nagayoshi . In 1919 he received a degree from the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he had carried out pharmacological experiments.

In 1919 he was the first to synthesize methamphetamine in crystalline form by reducing L - ephedrine using hydriodic acid and red phosphorus .

In 1920 he was appointed assistant professor at the Medical Faculty of the University of Tokyo and taught there until 1948.
