Princess Kiko von Akishino ( Japanese officially: 文 仁 親 王妃 紀 子 , Fumihito-shinnōhi Kiko or usually: 秋 篠 宮 妃 紀 子 , Akishino-no-miya-hi Kiko ; born September 11, 1966 as Kiko Kawashima ( 川島 紀 子 , Kawashima Kiko ) ) is a member of the Japanese imperial family as the wife of Prince Akishino of Japan .

Life

Kawashima Kiko was born in Shizuoka Prefecture. She is the only daughter of Kawashima Tatsuhiko, professor at Gakushūin University , and Kawashima Kazuko. She grew up in the United States , where her father taught at the University of Pennsylvania . She attended elementary school in Vienna when her father was working there. As a result, she learned English and German fluently . She studied and graduated from the Psychological Faculty of Gakushūin University in 1989. She then continued to study at the Gakushūin for a doctorate and completed the first part of the course in 1995.

During her studies, she met Prince Fumihito, the younger brother of Crown Prince Naruhito of Japan . They were married on June 29, 1990 at the Tokyo Imperial Palace . Before the wedding, the imperial court office gave the prince permission to found a new branch of the imperial family. The Tennō gave his second son the title Akishino-no-miya ( 秋 篠 宮 ), Prince Fumihito became the current Prince Akishino. His wife Kiko officially became Princess Kiko through marriage.

On February 7, 2006, the imperial court office announced that Princess Kiko was surprisingly pregnant again and was expecting the child in autumn. She gave birth to a son on September 6th, the first birth of a boy to the Japanese imperial family in over forty years. The boy who was named Hisahito is second in line to the throne after his father by law.

Kawashima Kiko is the mother of three children:

  • Mako ( 眞 子 内 親王 , Mako-naishinnō ; * October 23, 1991)
  • Kako ( 佳 子 内 親王 , Kako-naishinnō ; * December 29, 1994)
  • Hisahito ( 悠 仁 親王 , Hisahito-shinnō ; * September 6, 2006)
