Crown Prince Fumihito of Akishino ( Japanese 秋 篠 宮 文 仁 親王 , Akishino-no-miya Fumihito-shinnō; born November 30, 1965 ) is the younger brother of Emperor Naruhito of Japan , the 126th Tennō , and since the abdication of his father Akihito on 30 November 1965 . April 2019 first in line to the throne. He has been called Akishino-no-miya since his marriage in June 1990 and is head of a separate branch of the Japanese imperial family .

Akishino, son of Akihito and Empress Michiko , studied 1984-1988 jurisprudence , biology and political science at Gakushuin University and then at St John's College of the University of Oxford 1988-1990 Ichthyology specifically, the taxonomy of fish. In 1996 he received his doctorate from the Graduate University for Interdisciplinary Research ( 総 合 研究 大 学院 大学 Sōgō kenkyū daigakuin daigaku; eng. The imperial court office gave the prince permission to found a new branch of the imperial family. The Tennō gave his second son the title Akishino no miya on his wedding day . Akishino married Princess Kiko on June 29, 1990 .

Succession to the throne

In the Japanese primogeniture it is only possible for male members of the imperial family to become Tennō , that is, in the event of the death of Emperor Naruhito , his younger brother Crown Prince Fumihito will be appointed as the new Emperor of Japan.
