Akontion is the javelin throw , which was a sub-discipline of the Pentathlon , the historical pentathlon, at the ancient Olympic Games .

The Akontion differs from the modern javelin throw mainly in the technique. In ancient times, the spear was thrown with the help of a leather cord, the ankyle . It was wrapped around the shaft at the center of gravity of the spear and ended in a loop into which the middle and index fingers of the throwing hand were hooked. When the spear was thrown , the ankyle unwound and gave the spear a twist that made it fly further and more stable.

Little is known about the rules of Akontion: Since only the first place counted in every competition of the ancient games, the length of each throw was probably not measured, but only a mark was set at the point of impact of the furthest throw, which all other throwers then had to try to surpass .
