The Aktienbrauerei Merzig , also Actien-Brauerei Merzig or as abbreviation " ABM " was the largest brewery in the Merzig-Wadern district for 123 years . It was founded in 1864 and, with several changes of name, produced various beers in Merzig ( Saarland ) until 1987 , which were also sold internationally. The Aktienbrauerei Merzig was from 1900 to 1978, the strongest competition in Saarlouis resident thunder brewery , this because of the short distance of 19 km and due to the fact that there was in the town of Saarlouis 1887-1889 no brewery.

History of the brewery

Share over 1000 Marks in the Actien-Brauerei Merzig from May 4, 1888

At the end of the 18th century there were six breweries in Merzig. On October 10, 1864, Nikolaus and Johann Schuhler were the seventh brewery to receive the concession to build and operate their own brewery, which they called the "Schuhler Brothers Brewery". This emitted around 4,000 hectoliters of beer a year, which was maintained until 1884 despite the outdated technology. Due to the brewery's indebtedness, however, it fell to the two main creditors in 1884, who decided to continue the brewery themselves. They initially operated the new brewery under the name “A. Busch & Co. ". In order to increase the share capital and, among other things, to finance the modernization of the brewery and the expansion, it was decided to found a joint stock company . On May 4, 1888, almost four years later, the company was renamed for the second time. The brewery was now called "Actien-Brauerei Merzig", the small renaming to "Aktienbrauerei Merzig" took place after 1910. In 1907 the "Brauerei Zimmermann" in Wadern was taken over. The following period up to the mid-30s was quite successful for the brewery. The brewery only had to struggle with problems when the Saarland became part of the German Empire. In 1953 the name was changed for the third time to "Saarfürst-Brauerei AG". Until 1974/75 the "Saarfürst-Brauerei AG" invested so large sums in new production facilities and innovations that it ran into financial difficulties. This led to the takeover of the brewery by the Homburg- based Karlsberg Brewery . In 1987 beer production was finally shut down in Merzig and relocated to Homburg. From 1989 to 1990 the demolition of the Merzig production facilities began. The patrician house, the old administrative seat, was not affected. In 2000 a new brewery with catering was created as the “Saarfürst Merziger Brauhaus” at the Merzig yacht harbor. According to the company, the output figures are designed to meet the needs of the company's own catering business, so that one cannot speak of a successor to the Saarfürst.

Output numbers

In the black year of the stock exchanges, i.e. 1929, the ABM still produced 85,849 hl, which, analogous to other Saarland breweries, decreased to 46,327 hl by 1936. During the war years the emissions leveled off at around 50,000 hl / year, with the exception of the evacuation year 1944 with 8,785 hl. The post-war period up to the second Saar Statute brought an increase to 76,644 hl in 1955 and a significant increase from 1956 to 91,435 hl, which can be ascribed to the first modernization measures. The following years brought output values between 90,811 (1963) and 109,993 (1997) hl. Overall, the ABM produced 4,422,642 hl between 1929 and 1978 and was thus 1,902,536 hl ahead of its local competitor, the Donnerbrauerei in Saarlouis .

High forest water

Water plays an important role in the brewing process. The high forest water used in Merzig was considered to be very suitable. The Merziger Brewery also advertised this feature on its beer coasters: “We have been brewing beer since 1862. That is over a hundred years of tradition and experience. With a lot of love, selected raw materials and The soft high forest water from the Heimlinger Valley is what we brew our beer today. "

Brands and varieties

Like most breweries, the Aktienbrauerei and later Saarfürst offered different brands. Among the better known are the ABM Bockbier (before 1900), ABM: Saarfürst Pilsener, Saarfürst Bier-Eiche, Saarfürst Pils, Saarfürst Export. The Saarfürst ordered a fruit juice drink with Olympia and a low-alcohol beer with Saarfürst malt beer. The ABM Saarfürst Pils Spezzial (sometimes simply Saarfürst Spezial or Caramel) was described and sold as a low-alcohol nutrient beer.
