Bone marrow donation campaign in Bavaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Bone Marrow Donation Campaign in Bavaria (AKB) is a non-profit foundation based in Gauting .

Your tasks are the search for potential donors for a stem cell transplant , the typing of already registered donors, the acquisition of appropriate stem cell preparations and the establishment and operation of an umbilical cord blood bank .

These donors or stem cell preparations can be referred to patients worldwide via the Central Bone Marrow Donor Register Germany in Ulm.

history

The AKB goes back to a bone marrow donor file that was created in July 1989 as the first such file in Bavaria at the Großhadern Clinic . The first donation was made in 1993. In the same year the AKB was founded as a development association ; the first office was in Krailling . In order to be able to fulfill the strict legal requirements for the extraction and further processing of stem cell preparations, the Bayerische Stammzellbank gGmbH (BSB) was founded on December 18, 1997 , which took over these tasks on behalf of the association. In 2006 the file was transferred to a foundation.

In July 1995, the then Bavarian Minister of Social Affairs, Barbara Stamm, took over the patronage of the AKB, which she continues to exercise.

In February 2008, the 1000th stem cell donation could be arranged, in January 2018 the 4000th. Today the AKB is one of the largest donor databases of this kind with over 310,000 registered potential donors (as of 2018).

Umbilical cord blood bank

No suitable donor can be found for around a third of all patients, even when searching worldwide. Some of these patients can still be helped, with the help of stem cells obtained from umbilical cord blood . In contrast to conventional stem cell preparations, which are only obtained from the bone marrow when needed or - via apheresis - from the blood of a donor, umbilical cord blood preparations must be made immediately after birth and stored frozen. For this purpose, the AKB began in 1999 with the establishment of the first and purely non-profit umbilical cord blood bank in Bavaria. The first such preparation was transplanted in July 2000. By the end of 2009, 2400 umbilical cord preparations had been stored at the AKB; 47 patients have already been treated with it. By 2018 the number had grown to 4,000 preparations.
