Christian Friedrich Otto , from 1814 by Otto , (born October 26, 1758 in Dettingen , † September 8, 1836 in Stuttgart ) was a Württemberg civil servant and politician .

Life and work

Otto was born in Dettingen in the Oberamt Kirchheim as the son of the Protestant pastor there. After attending grammar school in Stuttgart, he studied law with Carl Christoph Hofacker at the University of Tübingen . He later moved to the University of Strasbourg and studied French law at the Supreme Court in Colmar . He submitted the dissertation Brevis Parlamentorum Galliae notitia , prepared in Colmar , in 1780 in Tübingen to obtain his doctorate and was initially an advocate for the Württemberg chancellery and court .

In 1786 he was appointed secret cabinet secretary to Duke Carl Eugen . In 1792 he was appointed real councilor and assessor of the appeal court. Further stations of his career up to the establishment of the Kingdom of Württemberg among others, the offices of were Kammerprokurators and the First Council of Rentkammer , Praeses of the upper mountain saline - and Mint in which Umgelds - and Taxdeputation and member of Kommerziendeputation. After 1806 he took over the directorate of the police department of the Württemberg upper government, the upper regional economics college and the medical department.

During the period of the coalition wars , he was also the general commissioner for billeting and supplying foreign troops. This included the financial and material management of the military logistics and the hospital system. In 1811 Otto became head of the municipal administration section and a member of the newly established Württemberg State Council. In 1815 he took care of the financial compensation of the troops of the Württemberg army stationed in France and the army of the Grand Duchy of Hesse by the French Ministry of Finance.

Württemberg government offices

From November 8, 1816 to November 10, 1817 Otto headed the Department of Finance, which corresponded to the position of Minister of Finance. From November 10, 1817 to July 29, 1821 Otto was head of the Württemberg Department of the Interior and of Churches and Schools, which was equivalent to the function of minister of interior and culture. From July 29, 1821 to November 15, 1831 he held the office of President of the Privy Council . This corresponded to the position of prime minister until 1848, although this office did not officially exist because the King of Württemberg himself presided over the government. Christian Friedrich von Otto's entire career was that of a high and loyal civil servant and less of a politician in the true sense of the word.
