The Alšia is a 38.3 kilometer long river in Lithuania . It flows into the Verknė , a tributary of the Memel ( Lithuanian Nemunas ) , southwest of the town of Stakliškės as the right and most important tributary . The natural and uneven river meanders very strongly and flows through a sparsely populated natural and cultural landscape. The region is characterized by rural exodus. There are several lakes in the catchment area with an area of ​​137.8 km².

The Alšia rises from the 0.52 km² large Švenčius Lake, about nine kilometers northwest of Aukštadvaris . Tributaries of the lake are the Vadrė and four unnamed streams. After 12.5 kilometers, the Alšia flows into the 0.46 km² Alšiai Lake (also Pieštuvėnų ežeras). The mouth is located 24.1 kilometers above the mouth of the Verknė in the Memel.

Places on the bank are (population from 2011 in brackets): Ringailiai (24) in the district municipality of Kaišiadorys , Mockonys (12), Alšininkai (92), Sudvariškės (38) and Trečionys (39) in the district municipality of Prienai . At Noreikiškės there are the remains of two ramparts . and south of the Alšiai the Pieštuvėnų piliakalnis hill fort.

Hydrology

The average gradient is 275 centimeters per kilometer, with 900 centimeters in the upper reaches and 132 centimeters on the last 25 kilometers. The water flow in the mouth area is a maximum of 30 m³ / s, an average of 1.06 m³ / s and a minimum of 0.1 m³ / s. The lakes in the upper reaches regulate the Alšia flow. The difference in height between high and low water is less than one meter.

Tributaries

The two most important tributaries of the Alšia are Virkius with a length of 9.9 km and a catchment area of ​​18.4 km² and Kamainė with 6.5 km and a catchment area of ​​18.9 km². The receiving waters are (length in kilometers) :

  • left: Karvė (2.8), Veršiukas (3.8), Juodupis (3.4), Zelvia (3.6), Sulinga (2.5), Tauriekėlė (5.7), Meduja (2.8) ;
