al-Hassaf

al-Chassāf († 874 ), in another spelling al-Chaāf and with full name Abū-Bakr Aḥmad Ibn-ʿUmar Ibn-Muhair aš-Šaibānī al-Ḫaṣṣāf , was a Hanafi scholar from Iraq in the 9th century who worked as a court lawyer of the fourteenth Abbasid caliph al-Muhtadi († 870) was active.

He is the author of an important work in the adab al-kadi literature ( adab al-qādī  /أدب القاضي / adabu ʾl-qāḍī ), which deals with the rules of conduct for the judge ( qādī ).

Kitāb sharḥ Adab al-qāḍī lil-Chaṣṣāf

His Adab al-qāḍī work was commented on in the 10th century by Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn ʻAlī al-Rāzī al-Jaṣṣāṣ († 980).

It was translated into English by Gilbert Paul Verbit (2008).

Kitāb al-ḥiyal wa-l-maḫāriǧ

His Kitāb al-ḥiyal wa-l-maḫāriǧ deals with legal tricks and artifacts (on legal circumvention, see ḥiyal ).

Kitāb aḥkām al-awqāf

His Kitāb aḥkām al-awqāf deals with pious foundations of religion ( waqf ).
