Al-Hawtah is a city in Shabva Governorate in southern Yemen . It has over 30,000 residents and is surrounded by ridges.
On September 17, 2010, the government of Yemen ordered an offensive against 120 al-Qaeda members who were supposed to be in the city. It was completely surrounded and shot at with tanks, artillery and fighter jets. Parachutists jumped off and there was fierce street fighting. Most of the residents left the city during the fighting. When the city was finally stormed after five days, the fighters had disappeared. Incompetence and corruption are assumed.
