Ala miliaria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ala miliaria was an ancient site in the Roman province of Mauretania Caesariensis in North Africa.

The name shows that an ala miliaria was camped here, i.e. a cavalry association of the Roman army that comprised a little more than 1000 units (men and horses). Emperor Septimius Severus had established this unit here to defend the border against the nomads coming from the south . Since the large number of soldiers and horses had to be taken care of, a veritable city emerged here.

In late antiquity , a Christian diocese is attested here, from which today's titular diocese Ala Miliaria is derived. Apparently Donatism was strongly represented there.

The place was in the area of today's Beniane ( Algeria ), where the tomb of Ala miliaria is also located.
