Alain Fiard (born September 17, 1958 in Phnom Penh ) is a former French football player and later coach .

Player career

The player, who was born in Cambodia, spent three years with the INF Vichy training club in his home country France and won the Coupe Gambardella with his team before signing with the first division club SEC Bastia in 1979 at the age of 20 . After a first season with occasional missions in the relegation battle, he was able to establish himself in his second year at the Corsican club and with this also celebrate winning the Coupe de France in 1981 thanks to a 2-1 victory against AS Saint-Étienne . Because he was still set as a regular player, he initially remained loyal to the club until he moved to league rivals AJ Auxerre in 1984 .

At Auxerre Fiard was given a permanent place in the team and gained two years of experience in European competition , in which he had previously been represented in Bastia for one season. Due to a strong youth work, the internal pressure increased, so that in 1987 he turned his back on the club and signed with Lille OSC . In northern France he secured a regular place at Lille for years despite his age, which he lost in the course of the 1992/93 season. At the end of the year, Fiard decided to end his career at the age of 34 after 437 first division games and 28 goals.

Coaching career

The ex-professional retired from football for a few years until he returned to his former club Auxerre in 1997 as a youth coach. In 2001 he took over at the side of Guy Roux , who had already been his coach when he was a player, the post of assistant coach of the first selection. When he was struggling with heart problems in the winter of 2001/02, Fiard temporarily carried out his duties. In 2004 he left Auxerre and became the coach of the Moroccan club Raja Casablanca , but returned to France in the autumn of the same year. He then worked first for his ex-club Lille and then for Valenciennes FC as a talent scout, before going back to Auxerre in 2011 to work as an assistant coach, which he stayed until 2012.
