Alain Patience Niyibizi

Alain Patience Niyibizi (born 1985 ) is a Rwandan chess player and official.

Niyibizi won the Rwandan Individual Championship in 2015. Niyibizi is also the general secretary of the Rwanda Chess Federation .

The circumstances of his game against Kurt Meier-Boudane at the 2014 Chess Olympiad on August 14, 2014, in which his opponent suffered a heart attack after the 65th move on the board and died shortly afterwards, attracted media attention . Niyibizi gave up the game, which was technically a draw at the time. For the first time he represented his home country at the 2010 Chess Olympiad .

Its Elo rating is 1712 (as of August 2010). He had his highest rating of 1720 in January 2018. This puts him in tenth place in the Rwandan Elo ranking of active players.
