Alain Supiot

Alain Supiot (* 1949 in France) is a French legal scholar. He has been employed at the Collège de France since 2012 .

Professional background

After receiving his doctorate in 1979 from the University of Bordeaux as a Docteur d'Etat en droit, Supiot attained the aggregation of the law faculty at this university in 1980. From 2001 to 2008 he was a member of the Institut Universitaire de France (Chair Dogmatique juridique et lien social ). In 2003 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Université catholique de Louvain . In 2015 he was elected a member of the British Academy . Supiot taught at the University of Nantes . There he founded the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Ange Guépin , a research institution that takes a multidisciplinary approach to studying changes in social ties.

He was a visiting scholar at the Institute of Industrial Relations in Berkeley, USA, in 1981, and at the European University Institute in Florence in 1989/90. From 1997 to 1998 he was a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin . From 1998 to 2001 he was chairman of the Conseil National du développement des sciences humaines et sociales , since 2008 he has been a member of the Conseil scientifique de la Ville de Paris .

Among other things, Supiot is a scientific advisor to the editorial team of the International Labor Review, the organ of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

Supiot's work deals mainly with labor law, social law and the dogmatic justification of social ties. With his essay "The Spirit of Philadelphia", according to the review in the FAZ of June 10, 2010 of the French edition, he wrote "a clever, controversial and also angry book" with which he encourages the ethos of the 1949 from the ILO revitalized Philadelphia Declaration .
