Alan C. Newell

Alan C. Newell (born November 5, 1941 in Dublin ) is an Irish mathematician and physicist. He deals with nonlinear wave equations and solitons .

Newell went to Trinity College in Dublin (with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics in 1962 and a gold medal in mathematics) and received his doctorate in 1966 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with David John Benney ( Transfer of spectral energy in nonlinear dispersion systems ). From 1971 to 1979 he was Professor and Head of the Mathematics Faculty at Clarkson University . He later went to the University of Arizona , where he headed the applied mathematics department from 1981 to 1985 and the mathematics faculty from 1985 to 1996. From 1996 to 2000 he headed the Mathematics Faculty at the University of Warwick . Then he was back at the University of Arizona, where he was Regents Professor from 2004.

Newell investigated non-linear phenomena in waves ( solitons ) in hydrodynamics, with wave turbulence, in optics and lasers, in plasma physics and other areas. With Mark J. Ablowitz , David J. Kaup and Harvey Segur , he made important contributions to the inverse scattering transformation in the early 1970s .

In 2004 he was John von Neumann Lecturer . In 1976/77 he was a Guggenheim Fellow. In 1970 he gave the Kac Memorial Lectures in Los Alamos. In 1988/89 he was a US Senior Scientist Humboldt Fellow. He was editor and co-founder of Physica D. He has been co-director of the International Institute for Nonlinear Science since 1990.

In addition to being Irish, he is also a US citizen.
