Albert Bühlmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albert A. Bühlmann (born May 16, 1923 , † March 16, 1994 ) was a Swiss physician and professor of medicine. He was best known for his research in the field of diving medicine , especially the decompression theory . He worked at the University of Zurich , where he founded the pressure chamber laboratory in 1960.

At the end of the 1950s, Bühlmann began researching deep diving . He developed decompression tables and models for calculating saturation processes in the human body. These models were the basis for many dive computers . The following decompression models - some of which are still used today - emerged from the research of Albert Bühlmann: ZH-L8, ZHL-12, ZH-L16 and ZH-L17 Today, the decompression models that were created in collaboration with Max Hahn are also known, the so-called Bühlmann-Hahn tables. Most of the newer decompression models that have emerged since then are based on the work of Albert Bühlmann.

Bühlmann also developed gas mixtures with which the diver Hannes Keller in Lake Zurich in November 1959 reached a diving depth of 131 meters. In 1962 he set a record of 313 meters off the Californian island of Santa Catalina , which was only set 13 years later. He was supported in this by the US Navy.
