Albert F. Shields

Albert Frank Shields (born June 26, 1908 - July 1, 1974 ) was an American engineer.

He came from Ohio , graduated from the Stevens Institute of Technology and went to Berlin in 1933 to do his doctoral thesis at the Prussian Research Institute for Hydraulic Engineering and Shipbuilding. He was given Franz Eisner's empty office .

His studies were based on the work of Hans Kramer and Hugh John Casey (students of John R. Freeman who were also at the research institute). He developed the dimensionless Shields parameter, named after him, to determine the flow state at which the drag stress (shear stress) on the river bed leads to the onset of the bed load.

After returning to the USA, he found no work in his field and went back to work at the S&S Corrugated Paper Machinery Co., Inc. in Brooklyn , where he acquired several patents. From 1968 to 1971 he lived in Forest Hills, New York.
