The Albert Falls Game Reserve (partly also Albert Falls Nature Reserve , officially Albert Falls Dam and Game Reserve ) is a game reserve in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is located 20 kilometers north of Pietermaritzburg and encloses the Albert Falls reservoir . Founded in 1975 and covering around 3,000 acres, it offers a range of recreational activities including water skiing, sailing, canoeing, fishing, bird and wildlife viewing, and hiking. The waterfalls, the Albert Falls, are a special attraction .
The reservoir and the reserve are managed by Msinsi Holding, a subsidiary of the largest public water company in the province, Umgeni Waters .
In addition to the more than 280 bird species, mammals such as zebras , impalas , blessbok , mountain reedbuck , crown duiker , springbok , hartebeest and oribis can be found in the reserve . The heraldic animal of the protected area is the osprey, which can often be found here.
