The mountain reedbuck ( Redunca fulvorufula ), also known as the southern mountain reedbuck , is an African antelope belonging to the reedbuck genus .

features

The mountain reedbuck reaches a shoulder height of up to 76 centimeters and weighs up to 27 kilograms. The horns are up to 20 centimeters long.

This antelope wears a gray-brown coat with a white belly. There is a yellowish shimmer on the head and neck. In the event of danger, the mountain reedbuck raises its bushy tail so that the white underside becomes visible. The male has short, curled horns that curve forward. The weight is 30 kg, the shoulder height 70 cm.

Distribution area and habitat

Originally three subspecies were assigned to the mountain reedbuck, the range of which was very fragmented and comprised three widely separated territories. These isolated groups are now considered to be separate species. The southern mountain reedbuck is common in South Africa , Botswana and Mozambique . In general, mountain reedbuck prefer mountainous or hilly terrain with isolated shrubs and grassy slopes and need the proximity of open water.

Way of life

The bucks defend their territory all year round, the herds of two to six females and their calves move freely through the territories. Males without territory live individually or in bachelor groups. After the birth, the baby remains hidden in the thicket for two to three months.

The grass-eating mountain reedbuck is both nocturnal and diurnal, but rests in the midday heat.
