The Reduncini are a tribe of the horned bearers (Bovidae). They comprise nine species of antelope living in Africa , which are divided into three genera: the reedbuck , the waterbuck and the roe deer antelope . While a close relationship between reed and waterbuck is beyond doubt, the membership of the roe deer antelopes in this group is more controversial.

General

The Reduncini are medium to large, grass-eating antelopes. What all species have in common is their comparatively long fur, which gives the waterbuck in particular a shaggy impression. With the exception of the kob , the glands in front of the eye (pre-orbital glands) that are present in many horn-bearers are missing in all species . In this subfamily, only the males have horns; those of the reed and waterbuck are bent forward at the tip, those of the roe deer antelopes pointed and straight.

Reed buck and waterbuck are strongly tied to the water in their habitats and occur in all of Africa south of the Sahara . In contrast, the deer antelope has adapted to a mountainous habitat and only inhabits the southern tip of this continent.

The Reduncini comprise three genera with 22 species:

  • Tribus Reduncini Knottnerus-Meyer , 1907
  • Genus reedbucks ( Redunca C. H. Smith , 1827)
  • Genus Pelea Gray , 1851

Water buck and reed buck form the genus group of the Reduncini and are closely related to each other. This relationship is also well documented by morphological similarities and is beyond doubt. The position of the deer antelope is much more controversial. This was sometimes incorporated into the lugs due to its small dimensions or assigned to the gazelle-like . Some researchers even placed them in their own subfamily, Peleinae, which they placed at the base of the hornbeams. Molecular genetic studies, on the other hand, suggest a relationship with reed and waterbuck and therefore a classification in the Reduncini.
