The large reedbuck ( Redunca arundinum ) is a predominantly nocturnal species from the horned bear family. There are two subspecies. The species as a whole is not threatened, but regionally the large reedbuck has become rare and in the northwestern part of its range ( Gabon , Republic of the Congo ) has even been exterminated.

Appearance

The Großriedbock is a medium-sized antelope with a shoulder height of 80 to 105 cm . The fur is brown or gray-brown and colored white under the belly. The short, bushy tail is also gray-brown above and white below. The front legs have a vertical black stripe in front. The male has horns that point forward and are slightly curled.

In the event of danger, they emit typical, loud warning whistles.

Distribution area and habitat

It is common in the moister savannas of eastern and southern Africa. Due to its specific habitat requirements, however, the species is only ever gaps in distribution.

The Großriedbock prefers water banks with tall grasses and reeds as a habitat. These grazers occur both in pairs and in larger groups.

There are two subspecies.

  • Redunca arundinum arundinum , south of the Zambezi
  • Redunca arundinum occidentalis , south of the equator
