Albertus-Magnus-Platz (Cologne)
The Albertus-Magnus-Platz is the place of the central campus of the University of Cologne . It is located in the Cologne district of Lindenthal on Universitätsstraße , which crosses under it, on the outer edge of the inner green belt .
Emergence
When the university was rebuilt from 1929 to 1934, the area in front of or across from today's main building was named by the city after Albertus Magnus , one of the intellectual fathers of the old university founded by the city of Cologne about 100 years after him . The square essentially consisted of a narrow paved forecourt with access to the building from Universitätsstraße. However, it continued on the other side of the avenue-like Universitätsstraße in a shady lawn area, also delimited by two plane tree avenues , which since the 1950s has been delimited by a simple one-story lecture hall building, called a barn among students . Originally, further buildings in the direction of the medical facilities were supposed to form a real campus, but these were no longer built.
remodeling
With the growth in student numbers, numerous new buildings were necessary, for example a new lecture hall building in 1964–68, a new library in 1968 and the Philosophikum from 1971–74 , which now enclose an additional paved area opposite the main building. At the same time, Universitätsstraße was lowered and covered in 1965-68, so that a car-free space was created in front of the main entrance.
Art in place
The floor mosaics were designed by Jürgen Hans Grümmer , who worked with the architect from USB and Philosophikum Rolf Gutbrod . The figure of Albertus Magnus by Gerhard Marcks from 1956 is again in front of the main building. In front of the Philosophikum is a stele by Ulrich Rückriem from 2004.
Offers on the square
The offer of the Kölner Studierendenwerk with cafeterias in the main building and in the Philosophikum is supplemented on the square by an external commercial provider. Here at PIKA you can buy and consume ice cream, coffee and extra bread , pizza and small meals in a pavilion that was run for a long time by Italian bobsleigh champion Nevio De Zordo .
Residents
The only resident is the University of Cologne, it generally has the house number 1 or operates without a number. The other buildings have numbers on Universitätsstrasse, for example the Philosophikum number Universitätsstrasse 41.
