The Kölner Studierendenwerk ( KSTW for short ) is the student union in Cologne in the legal form of an institution under public law . With 660 employees, 87,000 students (as of August 2018) are looked after at the following universities:

It has 86 dormitories with around 4,700 places. The student village Efferen with 1,100 places is the largest residential area and is to be expanded to 1,800 places in the long term.

The Kölner Studierendenwerk is located between the main building of the University of Cologne and the Uni-Center ; the address is Universitätsstrasse 16. It is a member of the German Student Union and among the student unions represented there is the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia in terms of the number of supervised students and the third largest in Germany after Berlin and Munich.

In April 2015, the board of directors decided to rename the Kölner Studentenwerk to the Kölner Studierendenwerk. The renaming took place due to a mandatory state regulation for gender equality, as the term student is not gender neutral .
