Albrecht Eugen Melchinger (born March 4, 1949 in Aalen ) is a German agricultural scientist and mathematician who has gained worldwide recognition as a population geneticist, was a professor for applied genetics and plant breeding at the University of Hohenheim and received the honorary title of senior professor from this university in 2020.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Aalen in 1967, Melchinger completed his two-year military service in Dillingen an der Donau . He then began studying agricultural biology at the University of Hohenheim (1969–1971), which he continued in mathematics at the University of Stuttgart and graduated in 1976 with a diploma in mathematics. This was followed by a two-year course in Agronomy and Statistics at Iowa State University , Iowa, USA and a scientific activity from 1979–1984 as an employee at the Institute for Plant Breeding in Hohenheim with a doctorate in Dr. sc. agr. 1984. After a further 4 years at the Institute for Plant Breeding, Seed Research and Population Genetics, he completed his habilitation in the field of plant breeding in 1988 and worked as a visiting scientist at the Department of Agronomy, Iowa State University

In 1991 Melchinger was appointed professor for applied genetics and plant breeding at the University of Hohenheim. Even after his retirement in 2009, Melchinger remained active and was awarded the honorary title of senior professor by Rector Stephan Dabbert in 2020 .
