Alchester

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alchester is the Anglo-Saxon and modern name of a Roman city in the English county of Oxfordshire . The ancient name is unknown.

The city formed a square about 300 by 300 meters and had a network of streets intersecting at right angles. The urban area, which took up about 10 hectares, was surrounded by a wall, but extensive traces of settlement outside the city walls could be observed, so that the entire urban area took up about 40 hectares. The enclosures of military camps that preceded the civilian settlement could be observed .

Within the walled city there were various stone buildings, one of which was perhaps a bath , another building was perhaps a Roman-Celtic temple . These buildings were concentrated in the center of the village. Many buildings were made of wood.

So far only a few excavations have taken place in the city, so that the general character of the place still leaves many questions unanswered. Excavations carried out in 2003 revealed gravestones with inscriptions.
