Aldrovandia affinis is a 55 centimeter long deep sea fish from the family of lizard eels (Halosauridae).
Appearance
These animals have a very narrow, cylindrically shaped body. They have large, smooth scales on their skin. The anal fin tapers towards the rear. The weight of the animals is about 6 kilograms. The pectoral fin is very narrow, elongated and tapered towards the rear. The color is brown-gray on the back and sides and darkens towards the belly. The back is black. The males have a very good sense of smell, which is probably used to find female conspecifics. There is no external difference between males and females.
Distribution and way of life
This species occurs worldwide in the tropical and subtropical waters around the equator at a water depth of 700 - 2500 meters. Their habitat is the sea floor, where smaller animals such as worms, mussels, etc. prey.
Hazards and protective measures
Since this species is still relatively widespread and otherwise no other known hazards, the IUCN therefore lists it as ( Least Concern ) not endangered.
