Alejandro Cardona

Alejandro Cardona (* 1959 in San José ) is a Costa Rican composer, filmmaker and guitarist.

Cardona was a student of Jorge Luis González Fernández from 1975 to 1976 and then studied at Harvard University with Curt Cacioppo , Leon Kirchner and Ivan Tcherepnin until 1981 . In the 1990s, he also studied imaging and computer animation at Portsmouth University and the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht .

Cardona has been a professor at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica since 1986, and has headed its program for cultural identity, art and technology since 1996.

Cardona has received several awards for his compositions, including the composition prize of the Brookline Library Music Association (1978), the Hugh F. MacColl Prize for composition from Harvard University (1979), three times the Costa Rican music prize Aquileo Echeverría (1999, 2000 and 2002) and the Premio Iberoamericano Rodolfo Halffter de Composición (2004). At the Muestra Costarricense de Cine, Video y Multimedia , he received the 1999 awards for the best original music and the best experimental video .

In addition to his compositional activity, Cardona also appears as a guitarist and is a member of the blues band Calacas Blues .
