Ivan Tcherepnin

Ivan Tcherepnin (born February 5, 1943 in Paris , † April 11, 1998 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American composer.

Tcherepnin, the grandson of the Russian composer Nikolai Tscherepnin , son of the composer and pianist Alexander Tscherepnin and the Chinese pianist and music teacher Ming Tcherepnin (Lee Hsien-Ming) and brother of the composer Serge Tcherepnin had lessons from his parents since early childhood.

When Tcherepnin was seven, his parents took up teaching positions at DePaul University , and he moved to Chicago with siblings Peter and Serge . He studied with Leon Kirchner at Harvard University until 1969 ; he also took lessons in Europe with Pierre Boulez , Henri Pousseur and Karlheinz Stockhausen .

He has taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Stanford University, and in 1972 became director of the electronic music studio at Harvard University. He held this position until his death.

In 1978 Tcherepnin's first orchestral work was Le Va et le Vient . In the late 1970s, he worked with sound collages and minimalist musical structures. The study of Asian musical traditions gave rise to the Santur Opera in 1978 , which was performed by Peter Sellars at the Paris Festival d'Automne in 1981 and was awarded the Grand Prize at the Arts Electronica Festival in Linz in 1982 .

In 1980 he wrote Flores Musicales , a work for electronically manipulated oboe, violin and psaltery. In the 1980s he traveled as a conductor and teacher through Europe, Asia and the USA and was composer in residence a . a. at the Dartington Summer School in England, the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and the Korsholm Music Festival in Finland. He wrote a number of commissioned works for the American Wind Symphony Orchestra .

In 1991, his oratorio And So It Came To Pass premiered at Carnegie Hall on the centenary of the Oratorio Music Society . His most successful work was the Double Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra. The work commissioned by the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra , written for his former students Lynn Chang and Yo-Yo Ma , is based on the genre of the romantic instrumental concert and was awarded the International Grawemeyer Award from the University of Louisville .
