Aleksandrs Jackēvičs

Aleksandrs Jackēvičs , in the Soviet Union Alexander Wladimirowitsch Jazkewitsch, ( Russian Александр Владимирович Яцкевич , born March 25, 1958 in Dobele , Latvian SSR ) is a former Soviet judoka . He was a three-time European middleweight champion.

Career

In 1975 Jackēvičs was European Youth Champion. In 1976 he won first at the Junior European Championships and a month later also at the Junior World Championships. In 1977 he was again third in the Junior European Championships.

He celebrated his first big success in the adult class at the European Championships in Helsinki in 1978 , when he successively defeated the Swiss Jürg Röthlisberger , the French Jean-Pierre Tripet and Detlef Ultsch from the GDR and became European champion. Three months later he won the Spartakiade in Budapest and in autumn 1978 he won the silver medal with the Soviet team at the European team championships, in 1979 the Soviet team won. In the final of the 1980 European Championships in Vienna , Jackēvičs defeated the Austrian Peter Seisenbacher . At the 1980 Olympic tournament in Moscow , he won his first three fights, but lost in the semifinals to Jürg Röthlisberger. After his victory over the Swede Bertil Ström he received the bronze medal.

In 1982 he won his third title at the European Championships in Rostock by beating the Italian Mario Vecchi in the final . In autumn 1982 he received silver again at the European team championships. He won his last international tournament in Tbilisi in 1984.

In 1980, 1982 and 1984 the 1.84 m tall Aleksandrs Jackēvičs competing for Dinamo Riga was the Soviet champion. After his career he was active as a judo trainer in various countries, and for several years he was in charge of the Belgian women's team. Later he volunteered in the Latvian Judo Association.
