Alektryon (Guardian of Ares)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alektryon ( Greek  Ἀλεκτρυών , rooster ) is a young man in Greek mythology who was supposed to stand guard in front of Ares' door when he got involved with Aphrodite without permission. Alektryon fell asleep, however, and Helios , the sun, surprised both of them the next morning. As a punishment, Ares turned the Alektryon into a rooster so that he never forgets to announce the sunrise.
