Alembic (computer graphics)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alembic is a data format for the exchange of geometric data among computer graphic artists and animators who work on a joint project in a network. Since its presentation by Sony Pictures Imageworks and Lucasfilm on August 9, 2011 at the SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference , Alembic has established itself as a quasi standard. Alembic's program code is open, i.e. open source .

Unlike older exchange formats such as .obj and .fbx , Alembic is not limited to the pure geometry of polygon or NURBS objects, but also records particles, light and the hierarchies of computer-generated 3D scenes. For example, when Alembic saves the data of textures on objects, this is done by writing the textures onto the objects, known in the industry as "baking".

Its programmers named Alembic after a bar in San Francisco.

The filename extension is "abc".
