Alexander Grant (dancer)

Alexander Marshall Grant (born February 22, 1925 in Wellington , † September 30, 2011 in London ) was a New Zealand ballet dancer , ballet master and choreographer .

biography

At the beginning of his dancing career he won a scholarship to the Royal Ballet School in Covent Garden (London) and after graduation spent a large part of his career at the Royal Ballet . After beginning as a soloist in 1949, he was best known for his portrayal of the bottom in Frederick Ashton's "The Dream".

After finishing his dance career, he became director of Ballet for All in 1971, an offshoot of the Royal Ballet, which was aimed at a wider audience. He was then director of the National Ballet of Canada between 1976 and 1983 .

He later returned to the Royal Ballet as a guest artist from 1985 to 1989 and was also a guest artist at the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago between 1987 and 1989 . From 1989 to 1991 he was a principal dancer (Senior Principal) with the England National Ballet, the former London Festival Ballet.
