description

The monument is located off the A71 between Darvel and Greenholm. It commemorates Alexander Morton , who did a lot for industrialization in the Irvine Valley . The Edinburgh architect and designer Robert Lorimer was responsible for the design of the building, which was completed in 1927 after a year of construction . Lorimer created a building with a semi-octagonal floor plan. The masonry consists of embossed , cream-colored sandstone . Both the upper end and the two outer sides are clad with polished sandstone. In the middle of a wall niche is a bronze sculpture by Morton. Above it is Norton's life data engraved, while underneath there is a plaque with the words “Alexander Morton who led this valley to industrial fame and prosperity”. On both sides of the bust, panels show motifs from the textile industry and are provided with descriptive signatures. Both ends are concave and decorated with sculptures. On the left is a boy with a sheaf and sickle, on the right a girl. A wrought iron railing flanks the building and delimits the paved forecourt. This is accessible from the street via a small staircase.
