Alexei Alexandrovich Shachmatov

Aleksey Shakhmatov ( Russian Алексей Александрович Шахматов * June 5 . Jul / 17th June  1864 greg. In Narva ; † 16th August 1920 in Petrograd ) was a Russian linguist.

biography

Shachmatov came from a noble family. From 1884 he studied at the historical-philological faculty of Moscow University , in 1887 he received his doctorate with a thesis "On length and emphasis in common Slavonic". In 1890 he was appointed private lecturer. In 1894 he became an employee of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences , in 1899 a full member of this academy. In 1910 he became a professor at the University of St. Petersburg .

From 1906 he was a member of the State Council and the Duma , u. a. he participated in the preparation of the spelling reform, which was finally implemented in 1917.

Scientific work

Shachmatov was one of the most important historical linguists of his time. His work on the Nestor Chronicle is best known, but he has also made important contributions in other areas, such as dialectology and syntax .
