Alexian Monastery Eschweiler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alexian monastery Eschweiler was the first branch monastery of the Cologne Alexians in the city of Eschweiler in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia . The building stood in the city center on the upper Jülicher Strasse and was a three-story brick building with three axes. The bricks were burned themselves.

history

The superior general of the Cologne Alexians, Brother Dominikus Loweg, rented an apartment with seven living rooms, two attic rooms and a garden in Peilsgasse in downtown Eschweiler on May 1, 1904 , where he founded the Alexian monastery in Eschweiler for the purpose of outpatient nursing. On November 3, the brothers Ignatius Glasmacher, Laurentius Walter and Sebastianus Ramm moved in. In the beginning, however, they hardly found employment.

In July 1906 the congregation acquired a 70.62 acre plot of land on the upper Poststrasse (since 1935 Jülicher Strasse), on which they wanted to build a house that would also serve to accommodate about 30 pensioners. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 16, 1908, and the monastery was occupied on May 1, 1909. It was consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the request of Archbishop Antonius Cardinal Fischer of Cologne .

Hard times followed, so that the monastery had to be temporarily supplied by benefactors. In 1936 six brothers worked in outpatient nursing and caring for 20 retirees. In 1937 the congregation was supposed to be abolished and only two brothers were still active. Nevertheless, it was not possible to close the Eschweiler branch because the pensioners had to be looked after. The congregation began negotiations with the Cologne Ursulines in August 1943 for the purpose of handover; a contract was signed on December 31, 1943 and approved on February 12, 1944. The brothers then left the house and handed it over to the Ursuline sisters, who also left it a few years later.

On March 5, 1956, the Eschweiler Bergwerksverein ( EBV) took over the monastery as a tenant , and on January 1, 1960, the building and land were leased to a manufacturer who later bought them for DM 110,000 . In the meantime there were apartments in the building for foreigners.

From 1966 to 1970 the building was demolished. Today the street Im Klostergarten , whose name was decided by the city council on March 28, 1966, still reminds of the Eschweiler monastery .
