Alfaro Vive, ¡Carajo!
Alfaro Vive, ¡Carajo! (AVC) was a Marxist-oriented left-wing extremist urban guerrilla in Ecuador , which was active from 1983 to 1988 and in 1991 finally distanced itself from armed struggle. It has existed as a political splinter group since 2005. Politically, AVC defines itself through the radical liberalism of Eloy Alfaros .
It saw itself primarily as resistance against the conservative government of León Febres Cordero , which persecuted the urban guerrillas with torture and murder. This chapter in the history of Ecuador is being worked on (as of 2009) by a commission of inquiry set up by Rafael Correa . In addition to the global political situation at that time, solidarity with Nicaragua and the disappointment at the rapid end of the left-wing government of Jaime Roldós , who died in a plane crash in 1981, played a role for AVC. The aim of the AVC was to start a nationwide guerrilla movement, for which it collected money through bank robberies and kidnappings and agitated the population through spectacular actions and distribution initiatives. They worked with the Colombian guerrilla M-19 , the Peruvian guerrilla Movimiento Revolucionario Túpac Amaru and other underground revolutionary organizations.
